No Saturday Mail? No Problem!

U-T San Diego--The message did not come via special delivery. Instead, the news that the U.S. Postal Service is moving to end Saturday mail delivery of first-class letters in August landed with an unceremonious thud on our collective front porch.

“The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits,” Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe said Wednesday.

In other words, snail-mail is inching off into the sunset, and it’s all our fault. But our Lands’ End chinos will still arrive as scheduled. Just in time for our next meet-up. The one we arranged through Evite.

“Anyone who has ever been in love with someone in the era of letters knows it tickles you when you get a letter from someone you love,” said Esteban del Rio, associate professor of communication studies at the University of San Diego. (Full Story)
