Title

Reaching out to the local community

Message

Jonathan Bowman, PhD, a faculty member in Communication Studies, uses his Communication Research Methods Course as an opportunity for students to develop social research skills that are applicable to their degree while providing practical experience that could be used and referenced in their future careers.

There are three primary objectives in Bowman’s research course that include, students learning how to reach out to and engage with local non-profit organizations, students actively creating a stronger USD presence in the community, and students working with people and organizations that are outside their daily experience.  Through these projects students have worked closely with organizations such as SurfAid, The Princess Project, San Diego Food Bank, and United Way to consider real-world research questions relating to how an organization engages the community.  Students are then asked to present their findings to their class and at the annual Creative Collaborations event for undergraduate research.
