USD Music Students Share Music with Ronald McDonald House
Students from the MUSC 120 Fundamentals of Music Theory class, with instructor Dr. Angela Yeung, performed for the Ronald McDonald House on Friday, November 18, 2012. Each class performed 30 minutes of music, including an original song that the students composed specially for the community outreach.
Their performance was well received by the families and the staff, and the students were invited to join in for dinner after.
Student reflections included the following:
“The project was a great learning experience, socially and academically. Moreover, it was wonderful service to the San Diego community because we were sharing the gift of music to struggling families who, I believe, really appreciated and enjoyed our entertainment. Although, to me, the most rewarding aspect of the project was the bonding experience I had with everyone in my class throughout the entire process.”
“It was great to see everyone use their creativity to come up with ways to improve the songs and add their own style to it. I had a great time writing the original song...For me personally this experience really pushed me past my comfort zone, which I think was great for me to grow as a musician.”
“I really enjoyed the group project of performing at the McDonald House…. The project also allowed me to get to know my classmates better and learn about them.”
“The Ronald McDonald House members seemed to enjoy our music and I appreciated their kindness towards us after we performed. I forgot how much I enjoyed performing.”
“I don’t know about the rest of my group but I can say that I had a blast…. I thank you for this truly humbling opportunity and experience.”
