Jazz Ensemble

Experience big band, small combos, solo and ensemble improvisation

The USD Jazz Ensemble was created in the fall of 2010 as a result of growing student interests and to provide students the opportunity to perform the rich and challenging music of one of the US's native art forms.

Consisting almost entirely of USD students (with some special guests) playing for both the USD campus and occasionally for the San Diego community, the Jazz Ensemble continues to grow.

USD students can enroll in the Jazz Ensemble for one credit each semester, without limit. Three credits will fulfill the fine arts core curriculum requirement.

Auditions

Students interested in joining the Jazz Ensemble please contact Justin Grinnell to arrange an audition.

Rehearsals and Performances

The Jazz Ensemble rehearses every Wednesday night for two and a half hours and gives at least one on-campus concert at the end of each semester.

Pre-College Program

Since 2016, the music department has selected talented high school students who are invited to play with the USD Jazz Ensemble. These students can earn college credit, completely free of charge, by joining the Jazz Ensemble and any ensembles conducted by the Department of Music. Please contact music@sandiego.edu for details.
