Ani P. Velo

Professor, Mathematics

Professor Ani P. Velo has been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of San Diego (USD) since fall 2002.  Prior to coming to USD, Professor Velo was the recipient of the Davies Fellowship award from the National Research Council, Washington D.C. and held a joined post-doctoral position at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY and U.S. Army Research Laboratory, MD. Professor Velo has taught a variety of undergraduate courses in mathematics and applied mathematics. Her research interests, mainly in applied mathematics, include wave propagation, structural optimization and composite materials.

Education

Professor Ani P. Velo earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA. Prior to her Ph.D. studies, she graduated Summa Cum Laude in Mathematics from the University of Tirana, Albania, and worked on her diploma thesis at the University of Siegen, Germany.

Scholarly and Creative Work

Professor Velo’s current research interests include wave propagation in multilayered media and structural optimization. Professor Velo continues her research collaborations with the Army Research Laboratory and engages students in her research. Professor Velo has involved USD students in research through the Senior Seminar and Summer Undergraduate Research Experience program. Since 2003, Professor Velo has coordinated a program with the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr, France. As part of this program, every year Saint-Cyr students come to USD to work on research projects under the guidance of faculty members from the Mathematics and Engineering Department. All these research efforts have led to a number of journal publications, conference proceedings and presentations.

Professor Velo has been serving for many years as a reviewer for the National Academies on their Research Associateship and Fellowship Program for Math and Engineering, as well as a mathematics judge at the Siemens Westinghouse Math, Science and Technology Competition.

Teaching Interests

At USD, Professor Velo has taught a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, such as Investigations in Modern Math, Survey of Calculus, Calculus I-III, Math Modeling and Senior Seminar. Professor Velo has participated in the Honors Program and taught Honors courses. She has also helped USD student-contestants prepare for the Putnam Mathematical Competition held each year in the U.S. and Canada. In upper division math courses such as Math Modeling and Senior Seminar, Professor Velo teaches students how to use math software such as Maple and Matlab, as well as technical writing software such as Latex.
