The Honors Community: Connections
Connect to the Liberal Arts:
The goal of the First Connection is to invite you to begin exploring the new worlds that a liberal arts education will open for you.
You will need to ponder possible majors and minors, of course, but the most important goal of a liberal arts education is to take classes across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines. Take advantage of the core requirements to go big and go broad. Explore as many different disciplines as you can. Find classes that fire your imagination, challenge you, and teach you weird and wonderful things that you have never thought about before.
Earning a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences is about far more than just getting a job in four years— we offer you an education that will last a lifetime. Only a liberal arts education gives you the background, insights, and skills you need to make your own connections, turn information into knowledge, and become a master of the universe (costume sold separately).
Connect Mind and Body:
The ancient Greeks thought it an essential part of education to strike a balance between a healthy mind and a healthy body. We have moved away from that ideal of late, but there are plenty of good reasons to reconnect to this bit of ancient wisdom. As Americans exercise less and eat more, and as you ponder the perils of the freshman fifteen, remember to find constructive ways to connect mind and body. Get out of the library every now and then to explore the joys of living in San Diego. Walk, run, bicycle, swim, play intramural sports, take up yoga. Don't just sit there—do something!
Connect to the Community:
One of the keys to being happy in your first year at USD is to forge close personal connections on campus and in the surrounding community. Stay informed about campus events. Get involved in clubs and campus organizations. Explore the communities that surround our campus— visit Balboa Park, Old Town, Little Italy, Hillcrest, La Jolla, Point Loma, O.B., P.B., Coronado, and Barrio Logan. Find an interesting place to intern. Get involved in community service, either on or off campus.
Connect to the Future:
Now is the time to begin contemplating the next phase of your life. You need to think strategically about where you are headed and how to get there. Where do you want to be in four years? Continuing your studies in graduate school? Working for the Peace Corps in Morocco? Training to be an astronaut? Playing bass in Steve Poltz's new band? Making big money as an office drone? If you don't want to live in your parents' basement for the rest of your life, you need to start taking the right steps now to prepare for life after USD.
