Do you need a letter of recommendation? Here is some advice:

  • Give your writer at least two-weeks notice, preferably more. Give the faculty member a clear deadline.
  • Visit the faculty member in person to explain why you need a letter and how you are a good candidate. Be sure to thank them for the work of writing you a recommendation.
  • Provide the faculty member with your resume.
  • Provide the faculty member with all necessary forms.
  • Often it is a good idea to share your letter/application with the faculty person.
  • If the letter is not electronically submitted, be sure to provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
  • Follow up with a friendly email a day before to remind them of the deadline.
  • Keep the faculty person posted if the letter results in success!
  • Good luck!
