History Learning Outcomes

World-class historians start here

History at USD prepares the next generation of historians to rise above. To learn the complexities of our past, then create a better future.

Learning outcomes

  1. Majors recognize history as an interpretive account of the human past—one that historians create in the present from surviving evidence. They demonstrate their ability to identify, access, critically evaluate and apply primary sources and scholarly works in support of an historical argument.
  2. Majors conduct original research. They ask focused and relevant research questions about the past; produce a compelling thesis or claim; position their claim in a wider literature; and construct logical and well-structured historical arguments supported by evidence.
  3. Majors communicate orally in a manner that demonstrates historical knowledge and an awareness of the audience. They organize their presentation effectively, deliver their material in a manner which encourages listening, and speak with poise and confidence.
  4. Majors effectively employ the conventions of historical writing. They anticipate the reader's need for information, explanation and context; use organizational strategies to present a clear, coherent and logical argument; make appropriate use of citations; and employ authoritative language that makes use of correct syntax and mechanics.
