Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence

Application deadline is Spring 2020.

The Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence is the most prestigious faculty award in the College of Arts and Sciences. It recognizes faculty members who possess a strong commitment to the values of a liberal arts education, have a demanding intellectual presence in the classroom, are open and accessible to students, impact the lives of students beyond the classroom and contribute to the development and growth of colleagues as effective teachers.

Recipients of the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence receive a framed certificate and $1,000 for professional development. Recipients also receive either a desk chair or rocker with the University of San Diego’s seal.

How to Apply:

Faculty members may self-nominate, or be nominated either by their home department or another faculty member within the College of Arts and Sciences.

All nominations must include the following supporting information, organized in a .pdf file:

  • A two-page self-evaluation of teaching regarding the five elements of teaching excellence:
    1. A commitment to the values of a liberal arts education;
    2. A demanding intellectual presence in the classroom;
    3. Accessibility to students;
    4. Impact on student lives beyond the classroom experience; and
    5. Contributions to the growth of colleagues as effective teachers.
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Student Evaluations for the two most recent years of teaching, including a tabulation of scores and comments for each class;
  • Grade distributions of the nominee and of the department for the two most recent years teaching;
  • Peer Letters (at least three);
  • Alumni Letters (at least two);
  • Sample Syllabi;

Nominations are reviewed by a committee of College faculty members comprised of the five most recent recipients of the Teaching Award and the Associate Dean of Faculty. The committee makes a recommendation to the Dean.
