Professor Jennifer Gorsky teaches a variety of courses, including courses on partial differential equations, the history of mathematics, linear algebra, and calculus. Her main research focus is on the well-posedness and analyticity of the Cauchy problem for nonlinear evolution equations.

Scholarly and Creative Work
Professor Gorsky’s main research area is partial differential equations (PDEs). She works on the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for nonlinear evolution equations and on the analyticity of solutions to such Cauchy problems. She has proven results for the KdV equation, the KdV equation with higher dispersion, a modification of the Camassa-Holm equation and other nonlinear evolution equations. Some of her recent publications can be found in the journals Dynamics of Continuous, Discrete and Impulsive Systems, Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Application, Journal of Differential and Integral Equations, and Mathematics and Computers in Simulation. In addition to her work in PDEs, Professor Gorsky has done some work in the areas of mathematical biology and mathematics education.
Professor Gorsky offers courses ranging from upper-division courses such as Partial Differential Equations and History of Mathematics, to lower-division courses such as Calculus I, Calculus II and Survey of Calculus. Professor Gorsky is developing a survey of calculus course that captures the interest of non-mathematics majors. In all of her courses, Professor Gorsky follows a conceptual approach, emphasizing deep understanding rather than rote learning. She teaches students self-assessment techniques and study skills that will foster their intellectual growth.
