The University of San Diego women's basketball team is riding a four-game West Coast Conference win streak now and this past week's games, both close victories at home against Santa Clara and San Francisco, showed the team's growing confidence in its play.

The Toreros rallied to defeat Santa Clara, 50-47, on Jan. 23 and then topped San Francisco 54-50 on Jan. 25. The wins improved San Diego's season record to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the WCC. The Toreros are 7-5 at home this season.

Against Santa Clara, San Diego trailed by eight points heading into the fourth quarter. The Broncos' lead grew to 42-31 before the Toreros went on a 9-0 run to move to within two points with six minutes left. Leticia Soares' basket with under three minutes to go gave USD the lead, 46-45. Madison Pollock made a shot and nailed the free throw for a 49-47 lead with less than a minute. Myah Pace led the Toreros with 13 points, Pollock finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, Soares had eight points and Jordyn Edwards had seven points.

In the win over San Francisco, Pollock had 13 points and 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the week to lift San Diego. Pace had 13 points and Erica Martinsen scored 11 points coming off the bench. But the teams exchanged the lead 10 times and the game was tied 10 times before it concluded.

The Toreros' win streak will be tested as they head to the Pacific Northwest this week. Up first is the nation's No. 13 team, Gonzaga, on Thursday.

Men's Basketball

The lone West Coast Conference game of the week for the Toreros men's basketball team, Jan. 25 against Santa Clara, resulted in a 65-52 loss in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

San Diego, which fell to 8-14 overall and 1-6 in the WCC record-wise, struggled enough in the first half to trail by 21 points at halftime. Despite outscoring the Broncos 35-27 in the second half, it was too late. Santa Clara has now swept the regular-season series with USD.

James Jean-Marie led the Toreros with 14 points, and Joey Calcaterra finished with 12, including a pair of 3-pointers. Braun Hartfield had nine and Finn Sullivan finished with eight.

The two teams were equal in rebounding with 35 apiece and both struggled with turnovers as they each had 19 in the game.

Men's Tennis/Women's Tennis

The San Diego men and women's tennis teams competed in their respective 12th annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend events with two road matches each.

The men, ranked 24th in the nation, traveled to UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center and split their two matches, losing a tough 4-3 decision to Central Florida on Jan. 25, but coming back strong on Jan. 26 to blank San Diego State, 4-0. San Diego now has a 2-1 early-season record.

The men's team won the doubles point against Central Florida on wins by August Holmgren-Joel Gamerov at No. 1 and No. 3 Gui Osorio-Nico Borter for the early lead. In singles play Holmgren and Gamerov each won their matches, but a 3-3 deadlock came down to the No. 4 players' match between Sacchitt Sharma (USD) and UCF's Bogdan Pavel. Sharma battled back from a 2-5 deficit in the third set, but ultimately fell 7-5 in the deciding set.

On Sunday, USD regrouped and blanked cross-town rival San Diego State. San Diego won the doubles point on wins by the teams of Borter-Marvin Schaber and Holmgren-Gamerov. In singles play Gamerov, Borter and Schaber each earned straight set victories to close out the Aztecs.

The USD women's team traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma and played a pair of nationally ranked teams in host No. 10 Oklahoma State on Jan. 25 and then facing No. 24 Wake Forest on Jan. 26. The Toreros were blanked 4-0 in both matches.

Against host Oklahoma State, Elizabeth Goldsmith and Helena Francati won their doubles match, but the home team won the doubles point with a pair of wins. Despite USD standout Solymar Colling playing her first matches of the season and battling well in both doubles (with Maria Tyrina) and at No. 1 singles, the Toreros fell. Oklahoma State won singles matches over Gemma Garcia, Tyrina and Colling.

Against Wake Forest, the Toreros again won a double match, Goldsmith and Francati doing the honors, but lost the doubles point. In singles play, Garcia, Goldsmith and Tyrina lost to give Wake Forest the team win.
