Athletics Roundup: Soccer Home Games Friday, Sunday; Volleyball, Football, Cross-Country

The 2019 Fall sports season arrives at Torero Stadium … in mid-August. The University of San Diego women’s soccer team will start things off Friday and the men’s soccer team follows suit on Sunday. Both teams have exhibition home games: The women host the Arizona at 6 p.m. on Aug. 16 while the men welcome the Albion Soccer Club at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18.

Both are tune-ups, but the soccer teams will also play the first fall season regular-season games. The women’s soccer team hosts Long Island University-Brooklyn at 7 p.m. on August 23 and then Holy Cross at 1 p.m. on August 25. See the full women’s schedule here.

The men’s team has added a second exhibition August 24 at 7 p.m. in Torero Stadium against Cal Poly Pomona, but it will be the last tune-up before USD opens the regular season in a 7 p.m. match August 30 at San Diego State. See the full men’s schedule here.

University of San Diego volleyball student-athletes — Megan Jacobsen, Katie Lukes and Roxie Wiblin — were named to the 2019 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team. Also, San Diego has been picked to finish second in conference, according to a coaches' poll revealed on Monday.
The preseason nods are a first for all three Toreros.

Jacobsen appeared in 30 matches, making 25 starts for the Toreros. The senior middle blocker was third on the team with 49 blocks (0.49 per set) and added 193 kills (1.91 per set). Lukes was stellar in her first year, appearing in 30 matches and making 20 starts. The outside hitter collected 229 kills and 2.44 kills per set, to earn a place on the All-WCC Freshman Team. Wiblin started all 31 matches for the Toreros, splitting time between opposite and outside hitter. She earned All-WCC honorable mention, pacing San Diego offensively with 308 kills and 2.75 kills per set.
USD was picked to finish second overall in a poll of WCC coaches with 71 points and one first-place vote, while BYU was first with 81 points and nine first-place votes. Pepperdine was picked to finish third with 66 points, followed by Loyola Marymount (58), Saint Mary's (42), Pacific (33), Portland (33), Gonzaga (32), Santa Clara (18) and San Francisco (16). 
USD opens its regular season playing in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic Aug. 30-Sept. 1 in Manoa, Hawaii. The Toreros face Hawaii at 7 p.m. (Pacific time) on Aug. 30, then meet Washington at 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 31 and close with St. John’s at 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 1. The USD football team fall camp continues as Head Coach Dale Lindsey, his staff and his players are busy preparing for the start of the 2019 season. The Toreros’ three-game non-league schedule opens with a 2 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 31 at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo before USD hosts UC Davis on Sept. 7 (7 p.m. kickoff) and then a 1 p.m. start on Sept. 21 against Harvard at Torero Stadium. USD has two byes, Sept. 14 and Sept. 28. … The football team’s Homecoming Game is also its Pioneer Football League opener, a 2 p.m. match-up Oct. 5 against Marist College … The USD men and women’s cross-country 2019 schedule has been finalized. The teams will run in four meets prior to competing in the November 1 West Coast Conference Championships. USD will run in the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Mark Covert Classic in Brea, Calif. on Aug. 31. The annual USD Invitational will take place on Friday, Sept. 13 with races run in the early evening for the first time. The women’s 6K race is set for 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for the men’s 8K on a large grass two kilometers loop at Tecolote Shores North Park. The other two meets are the Sept. 28 Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. and the Oct. 19 UC Riverside-hosted Highlander Invitational. … The 18th annual USD Men’s Soccer Golf Tournament is Friday, Aug. 23 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Registration and lunch are at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start and dinner and prizes awarded at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $250 per person, $900 per foursome. Dinner only tickets are $75.
