Athletics Roundup: Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball

The University of San Diego men's basketball team split two games last week, getting one win that was fairly predictable, a 95-47 home triumph over San Diego Christian on Nov. 15, but the other, a road game at University of Washington on Nov. 12, ended when a last-second 3-pointer attempt did not fall and the Toreros lost, 66-63.

Four Torero players — Olin Carter III, Isaiah Pineiro, Yauhen Massalski and Alex Floresca — finished with double digit point totals. Carter had 17 points, Pineiro 14, Massalski 12 (11 rebounds, too) and Floresca 10. Tyler Williams, who had a career-high nine assists, had a decent look on his potential game-tying 3-pointer on the heels of two successful free throws by Washington but it went off the rim.

Inspite of the narrow loss, USD had two scoring droughts in the game that gave Washington enough momentum. In the first half, the Huskies had a 12-2 run from 9:42 to 3:56 for a 29-21 lead. In the second half, a five and a half minute 19-2 Washington run, combined with USD scoring futility, gave the Huskies a 55-47 lead with 10:16 left.

USD rallied back and led by one with under four minutes to play before a 7-3 Washington run provided the final margin.

In the win against San Diego Christian, five Toreros scored in double digits, led by Carter's 21, 17 by Tyler Williams, 15 from Jose Martinez and 12 apiece from Pineiro and Massalski. Carter and Williams both made five 3-pointers. Pineiro and Martinez each had nine rebounds to lead USD.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team traveled to Minneapolis to face the nation's No. 25-ranked University of Minnesota on Nov. 17.

The result was a 53-48 loss, dropping USD's early-season record to 1-2, but USD led the game for three quarters. The Big 10 Conference's Gophers used a 24-12 fourth quarter performance to rally and pull away for the win.

USD led 21-17 at halftime and extended it to 36-29 after three quarters.

The Toreros were led by senior Sydney Shepard's 14 points, which included three 3-pointers. Leticia Soares chipped in 12 points. Patricia Brossmann and Madison Pollock each had seven points and Brossman and Myah Pace each had seven rebounds. Pollock had five rebounds.

Next Games: USD hosts Thanksgiving Tournament, Friday and Saturday, Games both days at 2 and 4 p.m. USD vs. Cleveland State at 2 p.m., Friday; USD vs. California, 4 p.m., Saturday. All Games at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Women's Volleyball

The USD women's volleyball team split a rare back-to-back pair of West Coast Conference matches on Nov. 16-17 against Pacific and St. Mary's, respectively.

The originally scheduled Nov. 15 match between USD and Pacific was postponed to Friday afternoon and moved from Stockton to Saint Mary's gym on the Moraga, Calif., campus. Poor air quality in Pacific's gym due to the wildfires burning in Northern California forced the shift.

USD swept Pacific, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-18, led by Roxie Wiblin's 10 kills and nine apiece from Cami May and Katie Lukes. Laura Madill had a season-high 35 assists and Kelli Barry had 10 digs. The sweep victory was USD's 11th such result of the season.

A quick turnaround for the Toreros occurred and the team played Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. The result was a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary's, 25-20, 27-25, 25-22. The loss dropped USD's record to 16-11 overall, 13-4 in WCC play.

Wilbin again led the Toreros with 15 kills and Lukes had 12. Addie Picha had seven kills and three blocks and Barry had 14 digs and Wiblin added 12 digs in the match.

Due to Pepperdine University's proximity to recent wildfires in Southern California, USD's regular-season WCC finale against the Waves Tuesday has been moved to 7:30 p.m. at UCLA's Wooden Center.

Next Match: USD vs. Pepperdine, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., at UCLA's Wooden Center.
