Arthur Gonzalez

Arthur Gonzalez

MS in Real Estate Student

My name is Arthur Gonzalez, Jr. I was born in San Diego, California and grew up in Tijuana, Mexico. I’ve had this unique upbringing where I’ve had the experience of living, working and studying on both sides of the border. I currently work in a family firm dedicated to real estate development and property management services. I consider myself an entrepreneur and I'm always looking for new ideas and projects that can lead to innovation and new businesses. I'm currently enrolled in the MS in real estate program at USD and am greatly enjoying the experience. I've also had the opportunity to travel internationally to Hong Kong and Taiwan with my fellow classmates. I would love to share my personal experience at USD with you.

Jared Gates

Jared Gates

MBA/MSSCM Student

My name is Jared Gates and I am a first-year graduate student pursuing both my MBA and Master's in Supply Chain Management. I just moved back to San Diego after a decade in Washington D.C. A lot of my best experiences so far have come from bi-annual treks to other cities for company visits, organized by USD. They provide a great perspective and I end up coming back from them refreshed and motivated again.

Antonio Aguilar

Professional MBA Student

I am a working professional with 15 years of experience in manufacturing. I am a father of two boys as a foster parent, and I have two dogs. Working 50 hours a week at my full-time job and taking care of a family has been a real challenge for me for the last eight months. Thankfully, the USD staff has been very supportive with questions and resources to help me navigate these months.

I am a first-year PMBA candidate and full-time technical policy analyst for the Energy Policy Initiatives Center at USD. My current work involves the application of economic tools in the climate planning process throughout San Diego County. As a recent addition to the MBA program, I am excited about the many opportunities to work collaboratively with and learn from my peers. When I’m not at work or class, I enjoy being outdoors, at yoga, or in the kitchen.

Which class has impacted you the most? Why?

Strategic Marketing has been my favorite class thus far, because it is an interactive and engaging experience. During the semester, the class conducts an online simulation where teams are positioning and marketing new products. There is a friendly competition between teams to see who can gain the highest stock price for the company. I learned and applied real strategies that I can transfer to a full-time marketing position.

Is there anything specific you would like to share with prospective students?

USD has provided an incredible experience for me. My best piece of advice to prospective students is to get involved on campus and attend as many events as possible. During my first year in the program, I have traveled to Ensenada, San Francisco, Portland, and Shanghai with USD. Be sure to get to know your classmates.

About me

I am passionate, goal-oriented and outgoing. My goal for the program is to gain to a diverse and international perspective. In order to achieve this goal in the program I have made friends from all over the world, and plan to travel to as many places as I can through what USD has to offer.

Will you tell us about a consulting project you have done through your MBA program at USD?

I completed a consulting project in January 2018 for a Brazilian apparel company. During the 10 day project, I acted as a consultant analyzing the company's sales data from past sales seasons in order to help them optimize operational process in the future. It was a great experience that allowed me to work with four Brazilian team members, and get to dive in their culture. The project also offered me the opportunity to relate what I learned in the classroom to the practical implementation of the project.

About Me

I am currently a second year full-time MBA student with an engineering background, and an interest in finance. Before joining USD I worked in supply chain, healthcare (GE) and IT infrastructure (IBM) for five years. The first year of the program is very intense, so I hope my second year will allow me to dedicate more time to community service programs, yoga, traveling, and learning how to ski and golf.

How did you hear about your program, and why did you choose to come USD?

I learned about USD’s MBA program through Chasedream (a popular Chinese platform) while I was preparing for the GMAT. What attracted me to USD was its location on the coast of California, the small cohort setting, and the very supportive faculty and staff. Scholarship was also an important factor too, and the beauty of the campus made the decision easier.

Which class has impacted you the most? Why?

Financial Analysis. I have a Bachelor’s in Engineering so this was my first formal “interaction” with finance. Dr. Svetina is very energetic and good at teaching which makes those 3 hours in the morning fly by.

About Me

I'm originally from Pennsylvania. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Supply Chain and Public Relations from Syracuse University in 2014. I began my career with BASF, in a Professional Development Program, where I completed 4 rotations 6 months each in various divisions (Customer Care, Performance Materials, Enzymes and Automotive Refinish) & geographical regions (New Jersey, Detroit, San Diego, Los Angeles). In my free time, I enjoy yoga, skiing, playing with my Australian shepherd, and planning a wedding.

Will you tell us about a consulting project you have done through your MBA program at USD?

I loved the opportunity to consult for Nike in Shanghai in January 2018. My team and I worked on a Supply Chain project related to RFID technology. The USD School of Business paired up with the Amsterdam School of Business to give us a global perspective while traveling and working with students from varying countries from Brazil to Africa to India to Netherlands and beyond.

Which class has impacted you the most?

I'm enjoying the Sustainability class I am currently enrolled in. I just presented to my classmates on the Pacific Garbage Patch (which is twice the size of Texas) between California and Hawaii. My teammate and I discussed how a company could repurpose plastic from our oceans and use the plastic for different industries taking into consideration a variety of key success factors. Check out the Adidas and Parley collaboration if you are interested in an example of how companies are working to keep plastic out of our oceans and transform them into high-performance sportswear.

About Me

I am 29 and I've been working for the past 5 years in retail, sales, inventory management, and customer service. I worked as a GNC franchise store manager/operator in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I enjoy spending time at the beach, playing golf, hiking, and eating great food. I like to travel as much as I possibly can.

Which class has impacted you the most? Why?

Financial Accounting has impacted me the most. This was a class that I had no prior background in, and seemed intimidating at first. I worked hard and learned a lot. I was very satisfied with my performance in the class.

Is there anything specific you would like to share with prospective students?

Make the investment in yourself. This education is valuable in so many different ways. You will make new friends, grow as a person, and gain confidence. I am very happy with the MBA program at USD, and I believe you will be too.
