Program Details

In October 2022, the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate, in partnership with the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), launched the Real Estate Awareness and Diversity Initiative (READI) program.

The first cohort of the READI program included 14 BLCI students who visited commercial real estate companies in San Diego, including Cruzan, Meissner Commercial Real Estate Services, Wells Fargo and Carrier Johnson [links take you to the video of each site visit].

Over the course of the four-week program, students had the opportunity to engage with company representatives to learn about the various career opportunities within their real estate sector. Students also participated in a "dinner at the desk," which allowed them to interact with company employees on a one-on-one basis to learn about their roles at the company. BLCI student participants received a $500 grant to fund necessary items like technology and professional attire for the program

“We are beyond thrilled at the success of this new program,” says Joe Bertocchini,’01, scholarship, development and alumni manager at the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate. “The feedback we have received from the high school student participants and their parents reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that students from all communities have access to learning about the great benefits of a career in real estate. We look forward to assisting them along their journey.”

Student and parent testimonials from the first 2022 READI cohort:

I am very grateful for this program and the opportunity for our children to see what is available as a career that is above and beyond what the schools can offer. This program has given my two children a view of what is possible, and excitement about college that the Hispanic [community] cannot provide to them since we are not exposed to this area.” Alisa Mendoza (parent)

“The day that I was told that I was going to be part of this amazing opportunity I was overjoyed. These trips to different companies have opened up so many new doors that I am more than grateful for. I have learned so much over these past few weeks. Thank you for all of your time and please rest assured that this made a huge difference in my life.” – Jaime Gil (student)

“Thank you for the knowledge shared by each and every one of you – I want to let you know that you made a difference.” – Celeste Favela (student)

Plans for the 2023 READI cohort are underway. With the successful graduation of the first READI cohort, we are now planning to welcome a new cohort of high school students to begin this program in the Spring of 2023.
