National Day of Listening - November 25
Taking the time to listen to what others are saying is a key part of life. We spend time listening to our professors, friends, employers, etc. Taking in what they say and responding accordingly.
We know that listening is a huge part of our survival and success in life, and yet there's often one person we often forget to listen to; ourselves.
I urge you to ask yourself, when was the last time you checked in with your body? When was the last time you asked yourself, am I okay? What do I need? You’ll notice that if you do, your body and mind will respond.
It’s easy to listen to others. “My professor told me to write an essay.”, “My boss told me she needs the report completed by Friday.”, or “Social media told me I need to take care of my health.” We keep these agendas from others at the forefront of our minds. We’re always listening to our surroundings and the commands from those around us. But we’re so busy listening to others that the messages coming from our own selves are put on the back burner.
Now learning to listen to ourselves is not an easy thing to do, but it is a necessary practice. Your body and mind want to be heard, so I encourage you this November 25th, to check in with yourself and listen to what you hear. Just like you would listen to a friend telling you how they’re doing, simply take it in and be a supporter, don’t force yourself to feel different or tell yourself that you're wrong.
Once you’ve taken the time to listen in on how you are doing, you can move forward with that information however you please. Maybe your body is asking for more sleep and you have time to give your body what it needs. But even if you don’t, your body will still thank you for just listening. Sometimes we can’t solve the problem, but more often than not we still want to be heard.
