Terry Whitcomb '53

Therese Whitcomb graduated from the University of San Diego’s College for Women in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in Art. Although Terry graduated from the University over 50 years ago, at heart she never left. In our interview and frequent interactions with Terry we can feel the passion and dedication she feels for the university, for its alumni and most importantly for its students.

1: What have you been up to since graduation?

After graduating from USD Terry attended the Art Students League in New York City and graduate school SDSU after that. Terry returned to USD as a faculty member for 35 years teaching in the College of Arts and Sciences. Terry is currently a trustee at the San Diego Museum of Art and has been trustee at Timken Museum. She also volunteers for Catholic Charities and Catholic Work and spends time with her 6 children and 13 grandchildren.

2: What is your fondest memory of USD?

Terry’s favorite memory from her days as a student at USD was studying in the Hill library in the afternoon with the sun setting.

3. What is your favorite place on campus, why?

Founder’s Chapel is Terry’s favorite place on USD’s campus because it has remained true to its original intent. Terry said, “I have not only fond memories of student life but also since with family weddings, baptisms and alumni masses.”

4. Who was your favorite USD professor or class?

Terry’s favorite professors while in school were Mother Mariella Bremner who taught art history and Mother Angnes Murphy who taught Thomism (a philosophy course.)

5: How have you remained involved with USD since graduation?

Terry said, “I was fortunate enough to come back as a faculty member 10 years of graduation and become involved as an alumna after that.”

6: If you could offer a current USD student advice, what would it be?

Terry said, “Try every possible subject you were not interested in. Take everything because you don't know what doors will be open to you. This is your chance to try it all!’
