Evan Owens '04
Since graduating from USD in 2004, Evan Owens has worked on Wall Street, traveled the world, owned an Allstate Agency, got married to the girl of his dreams (fellow USD grad, Courtney Parks Owens '04), and founded an internet company.
1. What have you been up to since graduation?
After graduating, I headed to the big city and worked on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It was straight out of the movies and I loved it! I moved on after a couple of years to become a sailboat captain of a private yacht based in the British Virgin Islands. I spent 3 years at sea, sailed over 10,000 miles and dodged a few hurricanes along the way. My next move was a bit less glamorous: I became an insurance agent and bought an Allstate Agency out in Virginia. Learned a ton about running a small business, but alas, the insurance business wasn't for me. I then founded an internet company, http://pogoseat.com, and we've built mobile-ticketing software that allows fans to upgrade their seats at any live event!
2. What is your fondest memory of USD?
My fondest memory at USD is laying eyes on the girl I am now married to! I will forever be in debt to USD for bringing us together. Other fond memories include Sunday brunches at the old "caf," studying in the lawn outside the library with fellow students, and of course, going to class everyday on the most beautiful campus in America.
3. What is your favorite place on campus, why?
I'd have to say the gym up by the vistas. We played many a great basketball game up there and there was never any shortage for some awesome competition!
4. Who was your favorite USD professor or class?
Professor Rohatyn, hands down. He was the classic brilliant professor that you could always find walking around campus with his head buried in a book. His philosophy lectures, the ones I could actually follow, were just brilliant.
5. How have you remained involved with USD since graduation?
As I mentioned earlier, I met my wife at USD and also some of my best friends, many of whom I hang with all the time! And of course I keep close tabs on the USD hoops team! We've got to beat Gonzaga!
6. If you could offer a current USD student advice, what would it be?
Do everything. Never say no to an experience. Take an art class if you're an engineer and vice versa. Go camping, learn to surf and visit Balboa Park. Meet everyone in your classes. Befriend the professors. College goes quick, so make everyday count for something.
