What is the difference between legal credit, soft credit, and associated credit?
Legal Credit (Primary):
“Individuals, corporations, foundations, or other entities that make gifts to USD of their own assets shall be given legal credit (hard credit) in their giving records maintained by the Office of Advancement Services.” Section VII of the UR Gift Acceptance Guidelines
Soft Credit (Secondary):
“Individuals related to donors by marriage or other legal arrangement, and owners or partners, either wholly or in part, of donating corporations, companies, practices, or firms, and persons serving as administrators or executors of a private or family foundation, trust, or other charitable entity shall be given “soft credit” in their giving records to connect person(s) responsible for a family’s or an entity’s gift.” Section VII of the UR Gift Acceptance Guidelines
Associated Credit (Tertiary):
“Individuals who, by their personal decision or influence, facilitate a corporate or foundation gift to the university from its corporate or foundation resources shall receive “associated credit” in their giving records to connect person(s) responsible for a corporate or foundation gift. Such individuals may be entitled to invitations, stewardship benefits, or special recognition in appreciation for their role; however, they do not receive gift credit on their personal giving record at the university.”

Who gets the credit for a matching gift?
Legal credit for a matching gift is credited to the company making the gift to match that of an employee or associate. Matching gifts are allocated in accordance with the company's policies, usually to the same fund as was the initial gift from the individual.
