University of San Diego President Mary E. Lyons announced today that Margarita “Maggie” Hernandez has been elected to serve on the USD Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2007.
“I am extremely pleased that Maggie Hernandez will be joining our board,” said President Lyons.“She is a respected alumna who has remained significantly involved with her alma mater even as her professional and personal lives have become increasingly demanding. Her understanding and involvement with minority youth programs will be tremendously helpful to USD as we build a more diverse and inclusive campus.”
“Each year, my husband Roland and I open our home to incoming students and their families to talk about the distinctive experience USD students receive,” said Hernandez. “We want families to understand that in addition to providing students with an outstanding academic education, USD provides students with an exceptional values-based education,” Hernandez said, adding that “I want to be closely associated with an institution which places great importance on that fundamental principle.”
A resident of Pasadena, California, Mrs. Hernandez is a dynamic higher education advocate. She has been extremely active in developing and supporting youth programs which prepare high school Latino students for successful matriculation into private Catholic colleges and careers.
“Youth today must understand that obtaining an education is the key to economic mobility,” Hernandez said.“I work with foundations and organizations dedicated to ensuring that every student we assist enjoys a future resplendent with opportunities because they have a college education.”
Parents of three children, the Hernandezes are avid art collectors. Mrs. Hernandez is very active in healthy living programs, and is a competitive cyclist and marathoner. Mr. Hernandez is the former chair and chief executive officer of Telemundo, Inc.
