USD IP Conference Opening Ceremony Rocks the House of Blues

San Diego (January 30, 2012) - Chief Judge Randall Rader of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and his band DeNovo opened the Second Annual University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Patent Law Conference with a performance at House of Blues San Diego on January 19. Lawyers, judges, professors and professionals, all of whom shared a similar interest in IP, spent the evening networking with colleagues and enjoying performances by Todd Marlette, OddBall, Krait and DeNovo.

This years conference, titled “The Future of Patent Law,” addressed, the America Invents Act and other landmark changes in patent law taking place at the Federal Circuit, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and globally. Event Details.

“We were thrilled that Chief Judge Rader was able to spend time with members of our local IP community. His performance at the House of Blues was a perfect way to begin our conference,” said David McGowan, USD’s director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law & Markets and Lyle L. Jones Professor of Innovation and Competitive Law. “Our students were able to see that it is important to work hard and learn from each other, but it is important to have fun together as well.”

The evening began with a 30-minute solo acoustic set by Todd Marlette from Qualcomm as attendees arrived. Introduced by, USD School of Law Professor Ted Sichelman and San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association President Ken Jenkins, OddBall from NuVasive played next with a mix of modern popular hits.

Announced by Professor David McGowan, Erin Gibson ,‘03, of DLA Piper and USD School of Law Dean Stephen Ferruolo, Krait from Qualcomm performed covers of rock classics from the 1970s and 80's. George Washington University Law School Dean for Intellectual Properties Studies John Whealan introduced the “headline” act, DeNovo. Judge Rader took the stage wearing sunglasses, leading DeNovo though a wide array of songs and the closing performance for the opening night of the conference.
