Register to Use the Mother's Room
Coordination of Use
The USD Women’s Center coordinates use of the Mother’s Room, located in the Student Life Pavilion (SLP 420).
Policy
The University of San Diego complies with California Civil Code (Section 43.3) and supports California Legislative Resolution Chapter 152.1998 that support and encourage the practice of breastfeeding.
Procedure
The University of San Diego supports breastfeeding mothers by providing the Mother’s Room, located in the Student Life Pavilion (SLP 420) as a private, comfortable room for them to nurse, express and store breastmilk for their babies. The room includes a changing table, cleansing and storage facilities.
Nursing mothers are asked to complete a registration formand sign up for time slots in the notebook provided in the room. It is only necessary to sign up one week in advance. If the room is needed at a time not previously reserved, and it is available, mothers should add their name after the fact. Occasionally, a campus visitor or USD community member may need temporary use of the room, which can be arranged by calling the Center at (619) 260-2396.
The Mother’s Room comes equipped with a gliding chair, changing table, lockers, and cleaning supplies. Neither a pump or refrigerator are provided. Mothers are responsible for transportation and proper storage of milk and brining their own equipment, storage containers and cooler.
Lockers are available on a first come, first serve basis. Mothers are responsible for providing their own lock and are asked to write their names on the back of the lock and inform the Center staff which locker is being used. The Women’s Center reserves the right to remove the lock if a mother is no longer registered as a nursing mother.
Those using the room are required to respect the privacy and security of the room and those who use it. They are also expected to clean up after each use and lock up or remove all personal belongings as they depart.
Mothers are invited to personalize the room by putting up baby pictures, posting messages to others, or bringing in articles or magazines for others to share.
The Mother’s Room may not be used for any other purpose than indicated in the policy. Violation of this policy may result in loss of privilege to use the room.
Notify the Women’s Center staff if any issues arise. There is also a comment section in the notebook for general comments or concerns.
Nursing mothers who are campus employees may request, from their supervisor, a reasonable unpaid break time to nurse or express milk. The break time must, if possible, run concurrently with any break time already provided the employee.
