Join a Leadership Council Committee!
The Leadership Council is looking for women and men to serve on all six of these committees! If you are interested in serving on a committee, download the interest form here and either e-mail it to brehibbs@gmail.com, or drop it off in the Women’s Center in the Student Life Pavilion, room 420.
The Women’s Center Student Leadership Council was developed in an effort to give student-centered voice to the implementation of the Women’s Center’s strategic plan, specifically as it relates to six core strategies (community, education leadership, safety, social justice, and wellness/health/counseling), as well as to provide students with concrete leadership opportunities relating to gender issues at USD.

This is my first year with the Women's Center and I look forward to remaining involved for the remainder of my time at USD. I don't remember exactly how I came across the application to be part of the Leadership Council, but that's what started it all! Being a Gender Studies minor has fostered my interest in issues surrounding gender. The Leadership Council provides a wonderful opportunity to implement and contribute what I have learned thus far in my Gender Studies courses. As the Community Co-Representative, I am entrusted with the responsibility of building community amongst women, encouraging the "development of intrapersonal and interpersonal skills by exploring multiple identities through a feminist lens", and creating opportunities for to authentically connect with others through shared and differing identities. In our endeavor to successfully fulfill our responsibilities, some of the projects we plan to undertake include: revamping Pamper Me Day, creating a Student-to-Student Mentor program, and re-introducing Wisdom Circles.

Through my work with USD's Preceptorial program I received a nomination by the program sponcer to apply for the first annual EMPOWER Women's Retreat, sponsored and lead by the USD Women's Center. After blindly applying to the retreat, I was amazed by the outcome. Never before had I been incredibly proud to identify as a Woman and a Feminist. The retreat opened my eyes to the need for gender equality starting on USD's campus and extending throughout the world we live in. Shortly after the EMPOWER Retreat, the opportunity to apply for the upcoming Women's Center Leadership Council began to float around in emails and through word of mouth. Due to the immense impact the retreat had on me, I couldn't help but look deeper into the opportunity to work closely with the Women's Center.
Since then I have taken on the role of Education Representative on the Women's Center Leadership Council for the 2009/2010 school year. My role as Education Rep. involves working with faculty, staff and students to provide educational opportunities that raise awareness and engage the community in dialogue around the oppression of women primarily in the institutional and academic setting. I hope to address the historical efforts of women who have made advancement towards gender equality in education as well as provide opportunities for further action. My goal is to also work closely with the Gender Studies department to address the ways gender bias intersects with racism, classism, and homophobia.

I became involved with the Women's Center at the beginning of my Freshman year simply because I wanted a job on campus and I was somewhat interested in issues surrounding women and gender. However, over the past year I have become far more involved with the Women's Center and gender studies. Last year, I took the "American Women in History Class" and worked as a general programmer at the Center and both experiences had an enormous impact on both my everyday life and my work. Following this, I joined the Women's Center's strategic planning committee last semester, and the Leadership Council this semester in order to help to implement the goals of the Center.
While last semester I planned numerous events on different topics, this year I am focusing on leadership development among women and the role gender plays within leadership in my programming. I am excited to work on the Women of Impact Luncheon, the Empower Retreat, as well as other events surrounding these issues that I find beneficial to our campus community!
