A Culture of Violence?

Encouraging Dialogue between Men & Women
Wednesday, December 3rd; 7-9 PM, KIPJ, Room 215

The Women’s Center is partnering with the Women's Equity Council and UCSD's Women Center and presenting an open forum and community dialogue around violence against women. The evening event will host speakers with diverse backgrounds who will share their experiences about the causes, cycles, and impact of violence on the individual and society. A panel discussion will conclude the evening focusing on violence prevention, empowerment, and advocacy.

16 Days Campaign
Activism Against Violence
November 25th - December 10th
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates, including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. (See enclosed “Key Dates” for more information.)
In late February, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called for the end of violence against women, establishing timelines for reviews of progress and an accomplishment endpoint of 2015. The initiation of his UNITE Campaign coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman’s “Say No to Violence” Campaign to end violence against women, and the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Violence. We are urged to join the activities to stop (finally) all forms of violence against women and girls, including domestic (e.g., battering, female genital mutilation, forced marriage), community (e.g., rape, kidnapping, trafficking), and national/international (e.g., victims of armed conflict, torture, rape as a war crime).
