LANGUAGES & LITERATURE TUTORING

Free tutoring is available each semester in the to lower-division language students as well as upper-division students enrolled in conversation or composition courses.
The focus of the tutoring program is on students enrolled in Language 101, 102 and 201, though tutors with advanced skills may also assist those enrolled in fourth semester and upper-division courses in conversation or composition. Tutors may not write your papers or do extensive revisions.
However, they may assist with:
- the organization and proofreading of papers that you have already spell-checked, grammatical concepts, vocabulary building, conversation, brain-storming ideas for oral presentations, rehearsing oral presentations

The Logic Center provides tutoring for students enrolled in logic classes at USD. It is staffed with tutors who have been recommended by their logic instructors and is an informal, drop-in center for students who need extra help in completing their assignments or preparing for their exams.

STUDENT-ATHLETES
Athletic Academic Support Tutoring
The Athletic Academic Support Center employs approximately 35 tutors for weekly one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, along with drop-in tutoring hours. The office has tutoring available in almost every subject and is available throughout the day. Drop in tutoring for math is offered five nights per week, and drop in tutoring for Spanish and English/Writing is also available.
USD student-athletes may request a tutor for each of their classes every semester.
(approx. 150 appointments are scheduled per semester)

SSS has tutors available to help with: Writing, English, Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Sociology, Theology, Spanish, Italian, Philosophy, Logic, and more.
Tutors are available at specific hours for “drop-in” tutoring. Check the tutoring schedule for the hours that they are available and the subject they tutor in. tutors are also available by appointment where astudent can email our tutors directly.
If you set up an appointment, you and the tutor can decide where to meet; either in BA 301 or on campus.
Student Support Services is jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the University of San Diego to serve eligible undergraduates at USD. The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with college requirements, and serves to retain and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education at USD.
To be eligible you must be a USD student who is ONE or more of the following:
- Low income (as determined by Federal Income Guidelines)
- First generation (an individual both of whose parents, or whose only supporting parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree)
- Students with disabilities (students who have a documented disability and are registered with USD’s Disability Services)

Tutors help students improve their academic writing. Students are tutored individually by their peers in all phases of the writing process, including:
- understanding a text
- thinking critically
- generating paper topics
- developing and focusing ideas
- organizing information
- refining and expanding ideas
- grammar and punctuation
Students may bring work in any stage of completion to the Writing Center, from brainstorming notes to rough drafts to graded essays. Our staff includes tutors experienced in working with students for whom English is a second language and with graduate students working on small and large writing projects. The Writing Center provides services free to all USD students.
All Writing Center tutors are recommended by USD faculty. Tutors study a wide variety of academic majors.
