USD alumnus speaks about his $200 million journey

In 1993, Tom Breitling moved to Las Vegas with only $100 in his pocket. In 2005, he and his partner, Tim Poster, sold the Golden Nugget properties for approximately $340 million. Breitling, a USD alumnus, spoke about this 12-year portion of his life during his presentation “A 200 Million Dollar Journey” last Thursday at USD’s SBA Business Plan Competition, which he co-sponsored.Read More

Three sentenced for Mission Beach crimes

The three men involved in the rape and robbery home invasion in which USD students were victims were each sentenced to life in prison on Friday. The three men were convicted in early February. According to a statement issued by the San Diego Office of the District Attorney, the three men, Willie Louis Watkins, 32, Donald Duante Smith, 21, and Antonio Washington, 19, were convicted on all counts brought forth, a total of 76 felonies.Read More

AS cancels hip-hop concert in JCP

Students found out Thursday that the much-anticipated May 5 concert featuring hip-hop acts G. Love and Special Sauce, Talib Kweli and The Cool Kids was cancelled. The announcement came three days after AS decided to cancel the show.Read More

Boyd named dean of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Mary K. Boyd, the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has a strong background of teaching and research, but she also has achievements that speak to her strengths as a person: when Boyd was teaching at Loyola University Chicago, she was nominated by her students to be featured “professor of the basketball game,” and she has a Facebook profile so she can be easily contacted.Read More

Cyclone strikes Myanmar Cyclone Nargis hit the shores of Myanmar Saturday, killing more than 22,000 people, with an estimated 40,000 missing, according to state media. The Myanmar government has allowed international relief agencies into the country. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands are without clean water and shelter.Read More

Vigil protests hate crimes

The USD community held a candlelight vigil April 30 in honor of all victims of hate crimes. Hosted by the United Front Multicultural Center, the vigil was a collective response to refuse to be silent. During the past months there have been 14 reported hate incidents on campus.Read More

"Theatre SMASH" is right on cue

“The energy of the cast was really just incredible…the show literally hypnotized me for an entire hour,” said Paul Cho after watching the opening night performance of “Theatre SMASH,” the USD Theatre Arts program’s latest undergraduate production. Performances began Wednesday, April 30 and run through today, bringing the total number of performances to nine in just nine days. “Theatre SMASH” is a collaboration which mashes together different art forms, such as music, writing, poetry and social commentary into one production.Read More

Ninety-six arrested in SDSU drug operation

Authorities arrested 18 San Diego State University students Tuesday after a year-long drug investigation. Items seized in the sting included $100,000 worth of drugs, consisting of four pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, ecstasy pills and other narcotics, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. A total of 96 people have been arrested, including 75 SDSU students.Read More

Professor discusses climate, election

“You may be wondering how the 2008 election affects climate change,” USD Marine Biology professor Ron Kaufmann said to a group of students last Thursday as part of the “Election 08” lecture series. Kaufmann is one of several professors participating in the lecture series intended to help students keep informed on major decisions affecting the next president. Kaufmann gave a speech on “Climate Change and the 2008 Presidential Election” at the Institute for Peace and Justice.Read More
