Student Media Advisor

  • M.A., University of Southern California, Communications
  • B.A., University of Southern California, Broadcast Journalism and English

Gina Lew was recognized as a Professor of Practice in Fall 2011, the first person to receive this title in the Department of Communication Studies.  She teaches Media Writing, and has also taught Introduction to Media Studies and Advanced Journalism.  Lew is a former award-winning broadcast journalist.  During her career she worked for CBS, NBC, and FOX news in Los Angeles and San Diego.  Her extensive background in reporting allows her to offer a “real world” understanding of the media.   Her courses offer a practical look at how the media think, react and respond to current events.  Through current events students are taught how and why the different disciplines of marketing, public relations, and journalism are related to one another.

Scholarly Work

Lew’s creative and practical work focuses on understanding current events.  She takes a look at the dying industry of the newspaper business.  She explains how that impacts both the media and society at large.  Media is changing.   How people receive information is changing. She thinks it’s crucial to understand how to navigate current events around the globe, not just in our local communities. Deciding what is newsworthy and why, and then offering different perspectives of the story, keeps people informed.  Having an informed public is the foundation of having a true democracy.
Throughout her career as a reporter and anchor, Lew has earned awards for excellence in journalism.  She anchored the top rated morning and noon news for CBS in San Diego at KFMB. As a Spanish speaker, she covered stories regarding border issues. Prior to settling in San Diego, she worked for KCBS, KNBC, and FOX in Los Angeles.
She also co-produced and hosted “A Work in Progress” for KPBS.  The program highlighted local emerging artists in the areas of music, film, and dance.

Areas of Interest

Lew focuses on the various relationships between news, public relations, marketing, and consumer.  Her courses are designed to facilitate and highlight the active interchange between theory and practice as well as between scholar and reporter.  She offers undergraduate courses in Media Writing, Introduction to Media Studies, and Advanced Journalism.
