CE Browser Settings for Internet Explorer
Last updated 11/30/10
- This help sheet is for Internet Explorer 7 but CE will probably work even better with Firefox because you will have fewer browser problems. If you are a Mac user, you should use Firefox.
- First, go to "http://pope.sandiego.edu"
- Find out if you have Internet Explorer 8 by finding the "Help" menu and by clicking "About Internet Explorer." If you have IE8, click the green compatibility view button you see in between the refresh button and the address bar where you type Web addresses. The compatibility view button looks like a torn sheet of paper. It will make IE8 act like IE7 for pope.sandiego.edu, which is good because IE8 has compatibility problems with CE. For example, CE takes too long to load or it crashes when you try to log in.
- If you see a yellow pop-up notice bar across the top of the screen, click on it and select the second option "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site." If you have a Google or Yahoo toolbar, make sure to also allow/enable popups for "http://pope.sandiego.edu"--you will probably need to click on the pop-up blocker icon.
- On "http://pope.sandiego.edu", Click the "Check Browser" button next to the login area and take the necessary steps to get rid of all the red X's and to have green checkmarks only; above all, make sure you install Sun's Java applet. After you install Java, you may want to follow these instructions to avoid getting security warnings each time you enter a WebCT course or Wimba Live Classroom.
- For multimedia content, you will also need the Flash player and you will need Adobe Reader to access PDF files.
- Next, click the "Tools" menu on the top of the browser.
- Click the "Internet Options..." link at the bottom of the list.
- In the small "Internet Options" window that pops up, click the "Security" tab (it's the second tab).
- Click the green "Trusted sites" button.
- Click the "Sites" button below the "Trusted sites" button.
- In the small "Trusted sites" window that pops up, uncheck the box labeled "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone".
- Type "http://pope.sandiego.edu/" in the dialog box labeled "Add this Web site to the zone".
- Click the "Add" button.
- Click the "OK" button when you're done adding trusted sites. The small "Trusted sites" window will close. Exit your browser, log back in to CE, and try to download a Word or Excel file again. If you get the "Open", "Save", or "Cancel" prompt, then you're ready to use CE. If you see the yellow security bar again, then folllow the steps below.
- Go back to "Tools --> Internet Options --> Security"--but this time, instead of the "Sites" button, click the "Custom Level" button.
- In the "Security Settings" window that appears, scroll down until you find the "Downloads" section (it's the second section). Make sure "Automatic prompting for file downloads" is set to "Enable".
- Click the "OK" button. The small "Security Settings" window will close.
- Click the "OK" button on the "Internet Options" window to close it. After resetting your browser, logging back into CE, and entering your course, you should now be able to download Word and Excel documents without the yellow security bar.
- You will now be able to go to http://pope.sandiego.edu and enter your CE user name and password to log in.
