When Tulane University cancelled its men’s tennis season in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, coach Tom Hagedorn offered a slot on USD’s team to Ryo Sekiguchi, who transferred to the University of San Diego in January 2006. Clearly it was a smart move all around; Sekiguchi was subsequently named WCC Freshman of the Year. When his Tokyo-based parents came to San Diego to see him play, Hagedorn went out to dinner with the family. “When Ryo’s dad, Fujio Sekiguchi, told me he was going to name one of his ships after the team, I thought he was joking,” recalls Hagedorn. But it was no joke: the shipping magnate has named an enormous tanker “Torero” in honor of his son’s affiliation with USD.
