J.D. Student Registration for Advanced Tax Courses
J.D. enrollment in advanced tax courses is by permission only.
Advanced tax courses for which permission is required will be
identified on BANNER.
Request for Permission Forms
Permission forms for each advanced tax course
are available at the Records office and the Graduate Programs
office (Warren Hall 207).
Pre-registration
1. Register for an alternate course schedule
J.D. students are not guaranteed admission to advanced tax courses,
so during the pre-registration process, please register for
courses you would like to take if you do not receive a permission
slip for the advanced tax course.
2. Submit a Request for Permission form to the Graduate
Programs office
Please submit to the Graduate Programs office (Warren
Hall 207) a completed request form for each of the
advanced tax classes you are interested in.
Be sure to provide all requested information,
including the grades you received in the prerequisite
courses listed for each course.
- Please note: Tax I is
a pre-requisite for all advanced tax courses.
- Before requesting an advanced tax course, please read the
course description carefully and be sure you will have satisfied
all pre-requisites. Your request will not be considered if you
have not taken the course prerequisites.
- J.D. students may not take a pre-requisite course concurrently
with the desired advanced tax course.
Notice of Approval, Adding Advanced Tax Course to Your
Schedule
You will be notified by e-mail if you are approved to register
for an advanced tax class. You may pick up your signed permission
form(s) from the Graduate Programs office or request that we put
the form(s) in your student mail box. You must then submit your
permission form to the Records Office to adjust your schedule.
J.D. Enrollment in Advanced Tax Courses
- New and returning LL.M. students have priority enrollment
in all advanced tax courses.
- J.D. students who have satisfied the course pre-requisites
are admitted to advanced tax courses in the order of their graduation
date. J.D. students should note that students accepted to the
LL.M. in Taxation have priority as well.
- Applicants to advanced tax courses are primarily screened
for pre-requisites and a demonstrated liklihood of success in
advanced tax courses by achieving a grade of "B" or
higher in Tax I, other advanced tax courses, and related courses.
Advance Standing Credit toward LL.M. in Taxation
Most importantly, please remember that USD law students are eligible
to apply up to 12 of the 24 required credits of USD advanced tax
courses (excludes Tax I) taken as a J.D. student to the LL.M.
in Taxation degree.
Academic Advising
If you have not done so already, please feel free to visit the
Graduate Programs Office to learn more about the remarkable opportunity
to take 24 LL.M. in Taxation credits for the price of 12 credits,
and receive an LL.M. in Taxation in just one additional semester.
Academic advising is available through our office for all J.D.
students interested in pursuing this option.
