The National Trial Team
The USD trial team has been selected as the best in the Ninth Federal Judicial Circuit for six of the past seven years. It competes in five major trial tournaments every year. In the fall, it competes in the National Tournament of Champions, an invitation-only tournament that selects the best of the top sixteen trial teams in the country. It also competes in the California State Championship Tournament. In the spring, it competes in the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition, the ABA National Criminal Law Competition and the Association of Trial Lawyers National Trial Competition.
Members of the team are selected through intra-school competitions held in September. Second-year students are selected by a closing argument competition and third-year students are selected by a trial competition. All students selected compete in at least one national competition.
