Use of Laptop Personal Computers
Summer 2008 EXAMS
Do you want to use ExamSoft (your laptop computer) for your final exams?
If the answer is "YES," you will need to complete the following steps:
- Make sure you have an active USD e-mail account (This account is necessary to access the wireless Internet, and for the set-up of ExamSoft's student database. If necessary, activate your account in Serra Hall 205. Please notify the Records Office as soon as your account is active).
- Make sure you have downloaded and registered the actual SofTest program by visiting www.examsoft.com/usdlaw
- user name: your student ID
- password: last 6 digits of your SSN
Everybody that wants to use a laptop computer for final exams will have to complete the above steps.
- Once registered, you may begin to download your personal EXAM FILES or electronic bluebooks. They will be available starting July 7th, and will be available throughout the examination period. Please download them at your convenience.
- Double click the "SofTest" icon on your desktop.
- Select "Download Exam Files" from the main menu.
- Skip past the screen asking for a download password.
- Download your personal Exam Files.
Please note, if you do NOT download your personal EXAM FILES you will NOT have the ability to use this software for your final exams. We recommend that you do not wait until the last minute to complete this part of the process, just in case you happen to experience trouble or technical difficulties. If you experience trouble with this process please report to the Records Office.
What if I have a Macintosh computer?
Use of Macintosh Computers to Take Exams:
Beginning in the Fall of 2007, students with Macintosh computers capable of running Windows programs may use their Macintosh computers for examinations, AT THEIR OWN RISK, as ExamSoft software is written for PC computers running Windows operating systems.
Our task force on this issue has concluded that properly equipped Macintosh computers with the appropriate software properly installed should run ExamSoft without difficulties. Although our investigations have not revealed any problems so far, some of the software involved is relatively new (still in beta testing at this writing). Students with Macintosh computers should weigh carefully the risk of discovering, during the examination period, new incompatibilities between their Mac, BootCamp, ExamSoft, and their particular configuration of hardware and software.
In order for a Macintosh computer to run ExamSoft, you MUST have:
1. A Macintosh computer designed with an Intel processor and a hard drive partitioned to run the Windows operating system on half of the disk
2. A version of Windows, we recommend XP (NOT Vista), installed on one of the partitions
3. "BootCamp", a program that allows you to move between hard drive partitions, installed on the computer to allow booting the Windows operating system
4. ExamSoft installed on the Windows partition of the computer (as described above).
***Students are responsible for obtaining and properly installing all of the above software for their personal computers.***
What if I need other accommodations?
ONLY if you need any of the above accommodations, submit a request for “Examination Accommodations” to the Records Office no later than July 18th, 2008.
