Visa & Financial Aid Information

Student Exchange and Visitor Information (SEVIS)

The Student Exchange and Visitor Information (SEVIS) system was implemented after September 11, 2001, as part of the federal government's effort to ensure the integrity of the nation’s immigration system.

SEVIS is a web-based program that maintains information on international students (F/M visas) and exchange visitors (J visas), and their dependents, residing in the United States. It is administered by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements (ICE) Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) and is used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at ports of entry. SEVIS has simplified what was once a manual process, resulting in more accurate and timely data input, faster processing and fewer delays in processing visas.

We are a welcoming nation, and our doors of opportunity and education are open. We must ensure that those presenting themselves for entry are legitimate. SEVIS is the program that helps U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to quickly verify that students presenting themselves at our borders are actual students and exchange visitors.

SEVIS Information for Graduate Law Programs

Federal regulations require that all international students enrolling at the University of San Diego School of Law provide proof of sufficient funds to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses. In order to receive a Certificate of Visa Eligibility (Form I-20), to obtain an F-1 student visa, you will need to verify your ability to meet US$46,175.00 worth of tuition and living costs with original documentation in English from your bank or financial institution (photocopies are not acceptable). If someone (such as your parent(s)) is supporting your education, we will need a notarized affidavit in English from them stating their intent to support you and original documents from their bank or financial institution verifying sufficient funds. If you will be bringing your spouse or children into the United States, you will need to demonstrate an additional US$800.00 per month for your spouse, US$250.00 per month for one child, and US$175.00 per month for each additional child.

Please be sure to complete the Certification of Finances Form (PDF). Please also complete and return the Student and Dependent Information Form (PDF).

Once your financial verification documents have been received by the Graduate Law Programs Office, you will be issued a Certificate of Visa Eligibility (Form I-20).  Use the number on your I-20 to make a visa appointment at the US Consulate in your country.  After receiving the I-20, you will also need to pay the SEVIS fee online and print the confirmation of your payment in order to receive your student visa.

Visa processing times vary. You may apply for your student visa up to 120 days prior to your program start date.  Please apply for your visa as early as possible to allow adequate time for visa processing. Please do not enter the United States more than 30 days prior to your program start date with your student visa.

Please do not use a tourist visa to enter the United States to study. You will not be able to enroll in classes with a tourist visa and will have to return to your country to apply for a student visa.

Financial Information

Please note that federal financial aid is not available to international students. However, the law school does offer private student loans to international students through the Law Access Private Loan Program. You may apply online at http://www.accessgroup.org/apply/ or by phoning (800) 282-1550. The Graduate Law Programs offers a limited number of partial tuition scholarships.
