Application Procedure
This website is designed to provide you with information regarding the financial aid process and how to apply for assistance.
It is your responsibility to submit all the required material by the announced deadlines. See the Financial Aid Calendar for detailed information on requirements and deadlines.
Prospective students are encouraged to apply early for priority consideration. Applicants should not wait for an admission decision before applying for financial aid. Admission decisions are made independent of financial aid decisions.
This site should answer most of your general questions about financial aid. If you have any other questions, or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
For financial aid consideration, applicants need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a Renewal FAFSA.
The Department of Education has issued a PIN code to all continuing financial aid recipients who filed a FAFSA for the current 2007-2008 academic year. The PIN is used to access, complete and electronically sign the Renewal FAFSA on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov as well as to view your federal loan history at www.nslds.ed.gov. Instructions on filing the Renewal FAFSA on the web will be included with your PIN mailer. Please be sure to save your PIN number since it can be used to view the status and results of your processed FAFSA as well as to make corrections to your Student Aid Report.
If you have not received your PIN, or if you did not apply for financial aid for the 2007-2008 academic year but want to for 2008-2009, you can either request a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov, file a new FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, or file a paper FAFSA. Paper FAFSA's are available at the Financial Aid Office. To prevent delays, please designate USD School of Law (code G06976) as recipient for the processed forms.
The priority filing date for the FAFSA is March 1, 2008 ; this means the Central Processor must receive your application on or before this date if you wish priority consideration for programs that have limited funding.
Student Aid Report (SAR)
As a result of your Renewal or new FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education. Please review your SAR and if any corrections need to be made, bring your SAR to the Financial Aid Office, and we will make the necessary corrections for you. If you are selected for verification, you will be asked to complete a Verification Worksheet and submit a signed copy of your 2007 federal income tax return, including all schedules and W-2 forms. Remember to make copies of your complete tax return before mailing it to the IRS. Do not submit copies of your tax forms unless we request them.
USD School of Law Institutional Financial Aid Application
Accepted applicants need to complete the USD School of Law Institutional Financial Aid Application. The application instructions specify the additional documents that need to be on file before an application can be considered. For priority consideration, applications must be submitted by March 1 st or within two weeks of notice of admission, whichever is later.
Financial Aid Award Letter
The Financial Aid Office will prepare a tentative award based on the evaluation received from the Department of Education. The award letter will detail which programs will help finance a student's education. In addition, students will be asked to complete the loan application(s) and other documents needed to establish their eligibility, as required by federal regulations.
Students who are first-time borrowers at the School of Law under the Federal Stafford Loan Programs need to attend and complete the entrance loan counseling requirement. The purpose of the counseling is to give students the opportunity to review borrowing limits and disbursement procedures, and confirm that students understand their rights and responsibilities as borrowers.
Disbursement
Students can check on the disbursement of loans to their account by visiting Student Accounts, logging in with their USD email ID and password, and clicking on “View Accounts.” If your enrollment status has changed and you have not notified the Financial Aid Office, this will delay your loan disbursement. If you need to notify our office of any changes, please email us at lawaid@sandiego.edu or bring written notification to our office. Please be sure to include your student ID number, your first and last name and your anticipated units for the applicable semester. Please note that 8-11 units is part-time, 12-16 units is full-time and LL.M. students are charged on a per unit basis.
