Paul Dostart

Adjunct Professor of Law

Dostart graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in 1973, became a certified public accountant in Illinois in 1974, received his J.D. from the University of Houston in 1977 (where he was the editor of the Houston Law Review) and received his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1978. He received the University of California San Diego Extension Course Sequence Award, "Business of Biotechnology," in 1993.

Dostart co-founded the predecessor to Dostart Clapp & Coveney, LLP, where he is currently a partner. His practice calls upon his expertise in taxation, executive compensation, corporate law, strategic planning and tax litigation in counseling many of San Diego County's high technology and biotechnology enterprises. Paul has also co-founded and served on the boards of two significant biotechnology companies, Q3DM Inc. and Vala Sciences Inc.

Dostart has chaired the San Diego County Bar Association Taxation Law Section and Customs Law Section, and he is active in the Business Law Section and the Taxation Law Section of The State Bar of California and of the American Bar Association. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the San Diego Tax Practitioners Club, the Forum for Corporate Directors and the State Bar of Texas. He is also a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Accounting.

His publications include articles in Taxes, The Journal of Taxation, California Tax Lawyer, and The Tax Lawyer, among others. He is also a contributing author to the multi-volume Commerce Clearing House Federal Tax Service and is both a contributory author to and an updates editor for the University of California Press/State Bar of California legal treatise titled "Advising California Nonprofit Corporations.”
