Center for the Study of Constitutional Originalism

The mission of the University of San Diego School of Law’s Center for the Study of Constitutional Originalism will be to further understanding of:

  • arguments on behalf of originalism as a general method of constitutional interpretation,
  • the variety of specific originalist methods,
  • the kinds of evidence relevant to originalist interpretations of the Constitution, and
  • originalist understandings of specific constitutional provisions.

The theory of originalist interpretation is that the Constitution has a fixed and knowable meaning established at the time of its enactment .

To fulfill this mission, the Institute and its members will:

  • Host academic conferences on originalist themes and publish the papers from such conferences.
  • Host public lectures on and discussions of originalist themes.
  • Offer seminars and lectures relating the originalist project for interested students at the law school.
  • Maintain a Web site describing upcoming events and providing resources for those interested in originalist scholarship and debate.
  • Lecture to federal and state judges on originalist methods and originalist understandings of various constitutional provisions.
  • Serve as a resource for the members of the bench and bar and law students interested in originalism and its findings.
