Annual Write-On Competition
How does Law Review select its members?
Only first-year day and evening law students are eligible for acceptance to the San Diego Law Review. For the first time, the San Diego Law Review will be holding a mandatory Write-On Competition that all interested students must participate in to be considered for Law Review membership. In previous years, students were eligible because of either academic performance or participation in a write-on competition.
Can I wait until next year to participate in the Write-on Competition? Can I gain acceptance to Law Review based on my second-year grades?
No. The upcoming Write-on Competition is the only opportunity for all first-year day and evening students to qualify for the San Diego Law Review.
What is the Write-On Competition?
The Write-On Competition is a cooperative effort between the San Diego Law Review and the San Diego International Law Journal that enables interested students to apply to both journals at the same time. The competition consists of a legal problem that each competitor must analyze and address. Each eligible competitor is provided with a copy of the problem and copies of all the relevant statutes, cases and other sources of law. No additional research is allowed. Students then prepare briefs, approximately ten pages in length, that address the relevant legal issues involved in the problem. Students must also perform a citation edit using The Bluebook. Grading of the Write-on Competition is completely anonymous, and selection onto Law Review is entirely merit-based. All competitors must do their own work and shall not confer with other competitors about the Write-on problem. Cooperative efforts will be deemed honor code violations and will be reported as such.
How many people will the Law Review accept through the Write-on Competition?
The number is not predetermined, however the San Diego Law Review usually accepts 30 to 45 students every year.
Transfer Students
There will be another small competition only for those second-year students transferring to the University of San Diego School of Law in the fall. The competition will occur in late August. More information about the competition will be available soon.
