Young Tax Lawyers of the State Bar of California Taxation Section: Judge Mark V. Holmes from the U.S. Tax Court

The San Diego Chapter of the Young Tax Lawyers of the California State Bar Taxation Section meets each month at 7:45 a.m. in the Faculty Reading Room at the University of San Diego School of Law. All those interested, including tax students and tax attorneys, are encouraged to attend and join. Refreshments and various breakfast items are provided.

HOW TO LOSE IN TAX COURT (AND HOW NOT TO)

Judge Holmes will give a few easy to remember practice pointers for tax controversy work framed in the context of cases which have appeared before his bench. Specifically, Judge Holmes will discuss Calarco v. Commissioner, T.C. Summ.Op. 2004-94, 2004 WL 1616387 and Hurst v. Commissioner, 124 T.C. 16 (2005). A copy of each case can also be found at:

Judge Holmes received his B.A. from Harvard and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. He is admitted to the New York and District of Columbia Bars. Judge Holmes served as clerk to the Honorable Alex Kozinski of the Ninth Circuit and in Washington as counsel to commissioners, United States International Trade Commission. Judge Holmes was deputy assistant attorney general, Tax Division from 2001 to 2003 and was appointed as a United States Tax Court judge on June 30, 2003.
