Founders Chapel – Founders Hall
5:30 p.m.
A reception will follow in the Founders Foyer and French Parlor.
On October 5, 2005, members of the San Diego area bench and bar, the St. Thomas More Society and the University of San Diego School of Law community will gather together in USD's Founders Chapel to participate in the Red Mass—a liturgy held to mark the opening of the judicial year.
The Red Mass dates back to the 13th century and is said to have started in France. Its name refers to the red color of the judges' robes and priests' vestments in attendance, representing the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. The mass is held to ask for divine guidance and assistance for the legal profession in performing its responsibilities.
At USD, the mass will be celebrated by The Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone, auxiliary bishop of San Diego, and is sponsored by the University of San Diego School of Law and the Thomas More Society of San Diego.
