University of San Diego

The University of San Diego community was founded in 1949 as two institutions:  the San Diego College for Women and San Diego University.  The University and its Alcala Park campus are named after San Diego de Alcala, for whom the University of Alcala in Spain was named.  The Spanish Renaissance architectural style is modeled after this sister university.  Detailed information about USD's history is provided at:     http://www.sandiego.edu/about/history

The University of San Diego is a Catholic university, with a strong emphasis on values within a campus atmosphere of academic freedom.  The influence of Catholicism and the academic freedom of the university are discussed thoroughly at:  http://www.sandiego.edu/about/catholictradition

The University of San Diego has approximately 6,200 students, 4,000 of whom are undergraduates.  Majors are offered within colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education.  In addtion, graduate degrees are offered in law, nursing, marriage and family therapy, and counseling.  The small, private nature of the university results in small class sizes, averaging 15-25 students, and a focus on individualized service.  A holistic, value-based liberal arts education characterizes the university's educational mission.

The 180-acre campus overlooks Mission Bay Aquatic Park with views of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  Close to business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, the campus is near the air and rail terminals, and a city bus line runs right past the campus.
