Pharmacological & Cognitive Behavioral Treatments for College Students with

Panick Attacks & Generalized Anxiety

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Presented by:

Jim Carter, Ph.D. & Margaret McCahill, M.D.

This workshop will provide training for psychotherapists on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy for panic attacks and generalized anxiety among college students.  The workshop will provide an overview of the theoretical rationale of CBT for anxiety and how these concepts can be incorporated into case conceptualization and treatment planning.  Specific CBT treatment strategies such as exposure, mindfulness, and cognitive restructuring will be described. Attendees will be encouraged to participate in experiential exercises to develop a greater understanding of the impact of the interventions.  The workshop will also provide an overview of some of the most common general medical conditions that can initially present as anxiety in a mental health care setting, as well as some medical conditions that can impact or worsen co-existing anxiety disorders.  A hypothesis for the basis of the psychopharmacology of anxiety disorders will be briefly reviewed, and the most commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications will be discussed.  The emphasis will be on the practical clinical indications, applications, side effect avoidance, and management for the medications, including "clinical pearls" when challenges arise, rather than on a biochemistry approach.

The training is intended for clinicians with a wide breadth of theoretical orientations and levels of CBT experience, and the integration of CBT with other treatment approaches will be encouraged.
