Leadership, Involvement, Inclusivity Honored at Student Organization Awards

The University of San Diego attracts high quality students who succeed academically, perform research, live out the mission and vision of a Roman Catholic institution that instill values that can help them forever in life. Other aspects that are consistently strong in USD students is a demonstration of leadership, involvement and inclusivity shown through USD's vast number of student organizations.

Several clubs, organizations, advisors and causes were recognized at the annual USD Student Organization Awards ceremony April 25 in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre.

It was a particularly celebratory evening for USD's Military and Veterans Program as three of the awards were connected to this campus population.

Jennifer Castro Garcia, president of the Student Veteran Organization, was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Leader Award. Derek Abbey, USD's Veteran Student Services Coordinator, USD Veterans Center Director and advisor of both the SVO and the USD HERO Club, as well as a full-time PhD student in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, was named Advisor of the Year. Speaking of the USD HERO Club, it received the Community Service Award.

The university's sizable Fraternity and Sorority Life student population came away with three honors as well. Forest Lieberman, representing the Interfraternity Council, was named Outstanding Student Organization President. Alpha Pi Sigma received an Excellence in Inclusion Award. JP Vagenas, representing Phi Gamma Delta, was selected as the Emerging New Member Award winner.

One of the newest clubs on campus, USD Border Angels, was honored as the New and Emerging Organization Award winner. The USD Math Club received the Innovation and Creativity Award. The Torero Spirit Award went to the USD Music Department's Pep Band. The Outstanding Academic Award was presented to the Law and Business Mediation Club. The Cultural Event of the Year Award went to the International Student Organization, which hosted its 32nd annual International Expo and Culture Fashion Show on March 24.

In addition to the awards presentations, the evening's ceremony also featured wonderful music and dance performances by the Folklorico and Mariachi Association (FAMA), People of the Islands, Less Than 3, and the USD Dance Company.
