USD Campus Events to Honor February's Black History Month

February is Black History Month and to celebrate it on the University of San Diego campus, several campus entities, including the Black Student Resource Center (BSRC), Black Student Union (BSU), United Front Multicultural Center (UFMC), University Ministry and Student Leadership, Involvement and Changemaking (SLIC), are hosting events through Feb. 28.

The university’s Black History Month kickoff event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 2 starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Life Pavilion’s Plaza Menor, coming soon after the All Faith Service concludes in Shiley Theatre.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the UFMC hosts an alumni social event from 2-4 p.m. at O’Tooles, which is adjacent to the La Gran Terraza restaurant within the Hahn University Center. Register or get more information about the event.

The first full week of February will have events on Feb. 7, 9 and 11. The UFMC’s regular #WhatsTrending event will take place from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday in SLP Room 418 (UFMC) to discuss current topics.

A faculty and student social will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in UC 113 (BSRC). Later that same evening, BSU will host a Candlelight Vigil for Black Lives in the SLP’s Plaza Mayor from 7 to 9 p.m.

Two Pancakes Peeps events will take place on Feb. 11 and 18 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Petco Park Tailgate Lot. The event, run and organized by USD students and assisted by student and staff volunteers, consists of making pancakes for homeless men and women in downtown San Diego, along with prayer and conversation with the community.

Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14 will feature a BSU ARTivism arts and crafts event devoted to Black Lives Matter in the SLP’s Plaza Menor space from noon to 2 p.m. Later that evening, an Afro Love Poetry Slam will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in Aromas, adjacent to Maher Hall.

A Family Feud Game Night event is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 in UC Forum A. A United Front Beyond the Classroom event takes place in SLP Room 413 starting at 12:30 p.m.

Blackness and mental health will be the discussion topics on Monday, Feb. 20 in the BSRC, UC 113, from 1 to 3 p.m. Three community meals will round out the fourth week of Black History Month celebration. A Pan-African Dinner will take place Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in UC 128; a community luncheon with Dwayne Crenshaw, chief executive officer and co-founder of RISE San Diego, will be hosted by SLIC from noon to 1 p.m. on Feb. 22; and a University Ministry Black Spirituality luncheon is Feb. 23, 12:30 to 2 p.m. in UC 113.

The final days of the month feature a BSU Step Show performance on Monday, Feb. 27 from 7-9 p.m. in the SLP Plaza Mayor, a State of the Community event on Feb. 28 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in UC 113 and, lastly, dinner and a film screening of “The 13th” on Feb. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in UC Forum A.
