Off-Campus Research Opportunities

Many federal and state entities offer student research programs in various locations around the U.S. Below is a list of programs that may be of interest to USD students.

(Note that STEM stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math")

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)- Sites are at universities around the U.S. Individual sites have a specific focus and some may have specical requirements for applicants. REUs span a broad range of social science, natural science, and math, and engineering disciplines. This is a summer program.

REU in Investigative Biotechnology at Western Kentucky University- Runs from May 29- Aug 3, 2012. Rising juniors and seniors preferred. Deadline is March 2, 2012.

Department of Homeland Security HS-STEM Summer Internship Program- Areas of research include engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological/life sciences, environmental science, emergency and incident management, and social sciences.

NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program- Open to STEM majors. Internships may be conducted in the Fall, Spring, or Summer.

NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP)- Open to physical, chemical, biological sciences or engineering majors. Special encouragement is given to earth, environmental or atmospheric science majors. This is a summer program.

Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)- Open to STEM majors. Internships may be conducted in the Fall, Spring, or Summer. Choose one of 17 DOE lab sites.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship- 10-week summer internships in the Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy. Open to women and minority students in STEM majors.

Human BioMolecular Research Institute Scientific Summer Internship- 8-10 week summer program to study human diseases of the central nervous system. Open to biology and chemistry students who reside in San Diego and went to a high school in San Diego, Riverside, or Imperial counties.

Summer Research Opportunities at UCSD- UCSD offers several research programs that are open to non-UCSD students.

Caltech MURF Undergraduate Research Fellowships- Caltech in Pasadena offers a summer program to underrepresented students (African American, Hispanic, Native American, females underrepresented in their discipline, and first generation college students) who have completed at least sophomore-level courses in science and engineering.

Amgen Scholars Program- Open to biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or neuroscience sophomores, juniors, and non-graduating seniors who want to pursue a PhD or MD/PhD. Choose from one of 10 participating research universities. This is a summer program.

Smithsonian Institution Internships- Internships in art, history, museums and preservation, and science. Internships vary- some are paid, some are unpaid.

Active Minds Emerging Scholars Fellowship- Open to any undergraduates who develop a resarch or creative project related to mental health. Particular emphasis is given to projects that deal with issues relevant to young adult communities. This is a semester-long program that takes place in the Spring semester.
