The health, well-being, and safety of our community is a responsibility and a foundational component of everyone at USD. So whether you’re having issues with a roommate, struggling with a challenging course load, need help finding an internship or just looking for ways to feel your best, we’re committed to providing you the resources you need to succeed, both in the classroom, and in life.
Health and Well-Being
As a member of the Torero community, you’ll have direct access to support services designed specifically to help you reach your goals, maximize your educational experience and develop the knowledge, values and skills to enrich your life, now and in the future.
Centers and Services
The Center for Health and Wellness Promotion (CHWP) works to increase students' knowledge and facilitate their motivation to change unhealthy behaviors related to alcohol and other drug (AOD) use through educational opportunities, outreach events, individual and group services, campus-wide programs, and research initiatives to enhance student wellness.
The Counseling Center's core purpose is to enhance the emotional, relational, and psychological well-being of students.
Disability Services facilitate academic support services and accommodations for qualified students with disabilities.
The Student Health Center (SHC) provides high quality, accessible, and convenient outpatient medical care for registered students.
University Ministry offers the opportunity for all students to seek spiritual guidance and/or to spend time reflecting with a wise companion on where God is moving in their lives.
Choices that Matter
The choices you make while on campus can set you up not only for an excellent college career, but a lifetime of success.
Stress is a necessary and unavoidable part of life. We cannot and would not want to eliminate all sources of stress. We can, however, learn to cope more effectively with stressors by applying effective physical, behavioral, and cognitive coping strategies.
Taking care of our USD community is each person’s responsibility. If you are ever concerned about a friend, classmate or roommate, there are Student Wellness professionals available to speak with you either at the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion (CHWP), Counseling Center, Disability Services, or Student Health Center.
Thriving in Healthy Relationships
A healthy relationship requires good communication and cooperation between partners. The quality of our relationships affects our lives in many ways, including our self-esteem, our ability to handle stress, and our academicand work-related productivity.
Fitness is an important part in maintaining your well-being and is easy to do with Campus Recreation and the two fitness centers on campus, the Mission Fitness Center and McNamara Fitness Center. There are also several programs and services such as intramurals, sports clubs and recreation classes. If you have a hectic schedule there is a Fit & Active drop-in Fitness Program with classes offered at convenient times.
At USD, being safe and staying safe plays a major role in who we are, and while the Department of Public Safety works to maintain the security of our campus, they can’t do it alone. You can do your part by getting involved in prevention programs, or by simply alerting public safety officers about suspicious behavior or activity.
Hate Crimes & Acts of Intolerance Response Procedures
An act of intolerance is an affront to a community that values diversity and strives to create an inclusive environment. USD expects all members of the university community to comply with the law and applicable university policies, including those that set forth the standards of behavior expected of community members, such as the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities and the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment.
The Department of Public Safety is located on the south side of Hughes Administration Hall, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergencies on campus should be reported directly to the Department of Public Safety.
Sexual Assault Resources
A C.A.R.E. Advocate (Campus Assault Resources and Education) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to students that have been impacted by a sexual assault.
All students are required to adhere to the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities. Through the student conduct process, we work with students to help them gain greater insight into their choices and behaviors in order to provide a safe environment for the campus community, one that supports the academic mission and provides a productive living and learning environment.
Academic and Career Support
Finding the right path to success is never easy, which is why USD has a host of services specifically designed to support your academic and career development. Whether you’re looking for job advice, searching for that perfect internship opportunity or need help managing your class schedule, you’ll have access to the people and programs that can help you reach your full potential in and out of the classroom.
