The mission of the Theatre Arts Program of the University of San Diego is
to present and promote theatre as an essential component of civilization, one
that educates and entertains. By training our students in all aspects
of theatre, we provide them with the experience and skills that will help them
develop a multi-cultural understanding of diverse societies, past and present,
and a life-long appreciation of theatre as a cultural force.
USD Theatre Arts Program Learning Goals:
- Students will demonstrate an ability to employ skills, recognize a body of facts, discuss theories, and define language specific to the theatre discipline.
- Students will show an increase in leadership abilities, organizational competence, innovative, imaginative, and creative thinking skills from the collaborative experience of theatre productions and theoretical examination of theatre practice.
- Through the study and practice of a variety of western and non-western dramatic literatures, students will exhibit sharpened critical thinking skills. This will be demonstrated in the ability to consider and analyze diverse cultures and points of view, compare and contract social systems, differentiate historical and contemporary perspectives of underrepresented groups domestically and outside of the United States of America.
- Students will be able to analyze and scrutinize ethical issues, social justice traditions, global issues, and moral dilemmas encountered and dramatized in the dramatic literature practiced and studied in our program.Students will exhibit a perception of self as a lifetime-learner, exhibit a sense of self-reliance, autonomy and independence, and demonstrate specific satisfactions and dissatisfactions with individuals, groups, institutions and social situations encountered in dramatic literature studied and practiced in our program.
