"Deportation Nation: History Repeats"
Faculty Research
$6,950

Description of Project:
Through the life of Pedro J. Gonzales, the Ethnic Studies program in conjunction with the departments of English and Art at the University of San Diego wish to address the current state of mass deportations here in San Diego and throughout the nation. This proposed three day program will partner with Calaca Press, the Museum of San Diego History, and the San Diego Central Library and utilize film, music, spoken word, poetry, and art to examine this critical and pertinent topic for those of us who live in the frontera. We utilize these cultural forms and expressions to compare and contrast the massive deportations of the 1930s in the United States as experienced through the life of Pedro J. Gonzalez and compare it with current government-sponsored deportation activities in the United States in an attempt to bring awareness and dialogue to this important and timely issue.

"Women Peace Makers Conference: 'Crafting Human Security in an Insecure World'"
Border Activity
$2,250

Description of Project:
As a part of its continuing effort to advance women’s roles in peacebuilding processes that promote human security, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice is hosting an international conference: "Crafting Human Security in an Insecure World." This year’s conference will bring together women and men from diverse backgrounds to probe global acquiescence to impunity, gender violence, and exclusion that continues to obstruct human security and cooperation. The confrontation and violence along the border area of the U.S. and Mexico, and in other regions of Mexico, which have known internal conflict, suggest delegates from Mexico working with these issues would benefit from this exchange of experiences and ideas. This grant will fund the participation of Mexican delegats to the Conference. The Conference will be co-convened by the Joan B. Kroc Institute fir Peace & Justice (IPJ), Global Justice Center (GJC), Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
