Re-Discovering Tijuana: USD Guide to Tijuana
Border Activity
$3,014

Description of Project:
This proposal will create a brochure and website by which the USD community can become familiar with the positive cultural features of Tijuana. Traditionally, USD has employed various mechanisms to discourage student activities across the border. However, in view of the University's commitment to cultural diversity, such restraints seem outmoded and counterproductive. The applicants seek to balance the traditional USD picture of Tijuana by creating a brochure and website that will highlight the border city's many positive attributes such as art, theater, sports, recreational facilities, and dining. The applicants will conduct on-site research of Tijuana's cultural and business organizations, identify ones that offer significant positive experiences, and publish them in the two cited formats. The website will tabulate the number of visits and include a feedback section to facilitate assessment. Thus, the applicants expect to promote an appreciation for cultural diversity while advocating enhanced cross-border relations.

Border Immersion Program
Border Activity
$2,000

Description of Project:
The goal of the program is to learn about and experience to some extent life on both sides of the San Diego-Tijuana border. Special emphasis is given to addressing immigration issues pertinent to the Mexico-US border. We challenge the participants to reconcile the diversity of views that are presented with the hope that they will continue to learn about this quite complex phenomenon. Our educational method includes reflection on one's personal history of being a "stranger," prayer that roots the exploration in Scriptural values and Catholic Social teaching, field trips that offer exposure to life on both sides, input from people with particular expertise on the topic, dialogue, and commitment to concrete action that might ensue from participation in the program.
