The leftist former front-runner in this nation's presidential race is watching his advantage crumble to the conservative ruling-party candidate, raising doubts that Mexico will be the latest Latin America nation to veer to the left. Two months before the election, a series of polls show a steady decline for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The former Mexico City mayor is idolized by many poor Mexicans and feared by many of the rich, who worry he would set Mexico on the anti-free market path of Venezuela and Bolivia.

Mexico's presidential race suddenly looks too close to call
The San Diego Union-Tribune
April 26, 2006
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/mexico/20060426-1137-la-pol-mexico-election.html

Mexico's presidential race is entering a two-month sprint to the finish with no clear leader, analysts said Wednesday, after former front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador fiddled away his lead by ridiculing opponents and failing to show up for a debate. Just as many, including international investors, were growing comfortable with the scenario of a clear victory for Lopez Obrador, the country now faces a potentially more conflictive scenario: a hotly contested race that might be won by a small margin on July 2.

Mexico's first presidential debate Tuesday features four candidates and an empty chair. Enjoying a healthy lead, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador decided weeks ago to skip the first of two nationally televised debates, saying he would prefer to spend time on the campaign trail. He may be regretting the decision: the leftist former Mexico City mayor has been battered by negative campaign ads branding him a coward for not debating, among other criticisms.

It would be easy to think of Luís Mandoki's "¿Quién Es el Sr. López?" (Who Is Mr. López?) as the Mexican "Fahrenheit 9/11" in reverse. Superficially, at least, the comparisons are tempting. Like Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit," "Sr. López" presents a documentary portrait of a politician who's been adulated by some and loathed by others. In "Fahrenheit," of course, that figure is George W. Bush, depicted as a bumbler reading stories about pet goats while the twin towers went up in flames.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the leading contender to win Mexico's presidential election on July 2, just wants to run out the clock. "Easter is here, so people will go on vacation. Then the World Cup comes in June, and people will have other things on their minds," he recently told a crowd in his seductively raspy voice in the port city of Lazaro Cardenas. And why not? Lopez Obrador has remained ahead in the polls ever since Mexico's two other major parties - the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, and the National Action Party, or PAN - unsuccessfully tried barring him from the race last spring with an impeachment process for disregarding court orders as mayor of Mexico City.

Mexican voters will select a new president in July.
