The University of San Diego Symphony

 

The University of San Diego Symphony is a student orchestra that welcomes the support and participation of USD alumni, faculty, and staff as well as musicians from the San Diego community.  With priority seating given to music majors at USD, performance opportunities are available for non-music majors and community  members, including high school students with advanced musical training.  Regular USD symphony rehearsals are held in Shiley Theatre at USD on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:45 pm during the academic year, with possible extra dress rehearsals immediately prior to a performance.

The USD Chamber Music Ensembles are student groups that also welcome the participation of non-USD students when positions are open.  The various chamber groups perform at venues that are more suitable for smaller ensembles rather than for the entire orchestra, such as school and community visits both in San Diego and during our annual tour to Tijuana and cities around the nation.  Regular Chamber Music Ensemble rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:45 am to 12:05 pm during the fall and spring semesters.  Rehearsals outside the regular class time may be arranged under special circumstances.

Fall 2009 Performance and Rehearsal Schedule (as of July 2008):

Rehearsals:

• Regular Wednesday rehearsals from 7:15 to 9:45 p.m. in Shiley Theatre, Camino Hall.
• Rehearsals will be moved to Salomon (Maher Hall) on Wednesday, October 8 and University Center Forum B on Wednesday, October 15 and 22.
• First rehearsal on Wednesday, September 3; last rehearsal on Wednesday, December 3.
• Extra recording session in Shiley Theatre on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m.
• Dress rehearsal for the Music Program North County Outreach at San Rafael Church (Rancho Bernardo) on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to noon.
• Dress rehearsal for the Messiah Sing-Along in the Founders Chapel (Founders Hall) on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Performances:

• Music Program North County Outreach: Sunday, October 19 at 4 p.m. at San Rafael Church, Rancho Bernardo.
• USD Symphony Fall Concerts: Friday, November 21 at 8p.m. and Sunday, November 23 at 2p.m., Shiley Theatre.
• Annual Messiah Sing-Along: Friday, December 12 at 7"30 p.m., Founders Chapel, Founders Hall.

Audition:

• All returning students and new community members must audition prior to the first rehearsal. Please contact Dr. Angela Yeung at ayeung@sandiego.edu for an audition appointment on August 28, 29 or September 2.
